RTFC Select XI 2

A sunny afternoon saw the Legends take on an RTFC Select XI at the annual presentation evening.

Up against a team that has amassed 55 points out of a possible 60, the Legends were somewhat daunted by the task. Goodman was a late withdrawal and was replaced between the sticks by giant stopper Jy Taylor. A quick back four made up for a midfield totalling well over 120 years between them and somewhere near 2 tonnes in weight. Up top the evergreen Brian Rolfe was paired alongside reserve team sponsor Jason Darke.

The Legends began the game in the worst possible manner. Kick-off went against them and the Select XI kept the ball for 3 or 4 minutes without the oldies getting a touch. As the Select side broke forward on the right the ball was pulled back to the edge of the area for Nick Howes. He allowed it to bobbled and mis-hit his volley allowing it to loop over the stranded Taylor. 1-0 Select XI!

To be honest the Legends never really responded. Able to keep the ball well in their defensive third, the vets seemed to find it difficult to make a break forward. Pressure was invited onto the Legends and Morrell nearly got in on 20 minutes but was unable to find any daylight between Taylor and the posts, his shot hitting the stopper square in the chest. In the middle of the park Gazza Geary was getting frustrated as his team mates failed to exert any pressure and when Rolfe was replaced by the headless Darwin, a series of offside decisions ensued. As the half ended the Select XI nearly had a second but for the agility of Taylor, managing to keep out a point blank header from Morrell.

Half-time: 1-0

Worryingly defensive partners Dilling and Cooper moved into the middle of the park for the beginning of the second half and King sat in alongside Neil Langridge at the back. Geary was replaced for his constant moaning but it didn't help as the youngsters continued to pile on the pressure. Taylor cemented his man of the match performance on 45 minutes as manager Wayne Lockey broke through. 20 yards out the boss struck firmly but Taylor's outstretched hand tipped the ball onto the crossbar and the boss was denied by his predecessor.

Changes were made and Geary came back into the fray with Taylor going up top and Darwin donning the gloves. Darwin made a couple of good stops from Howes but it was at the other end that things started to happen. Good work from Reeves pulled the ball back for Taylor who struck along way wide from 8 yards. Reeves then had a chance of his own from a similar distance but his volley went yards the wrong side of the post.

It became the Reeves show as he gifted the Select side their second. Attempting to pass the ball out from the back he managed only to pick out Nick Howes who skipped past the defence and squared the ball for Lockey who scuffed home from 8 inches.

Desperate to make up for his match-losing effort Reeves piled forward. Good work from Darke on the left led to a scramble in front of goal and, as the ball bobbled loose, Reeves had a chance to pull one back from 2 yards out. However typically the Rod Steward look-a-like hoisted the ball over the bar and the Legends dreams were shattered.

Full-time: 2-0

Would moving kids' football to a summer game help improve the development of young footballers?
Yes - better pitches mean a better chance to develop technique/skills
No - wouldn't make any real difference to development
Maybe - but I'd be worried about more injuries on firm pitches
